ChatGPT Ads for B2B Lead Generation- A Simple Guide for Manufacturers and Exporters

ChatGPT ads launched in India in August 2026. They let manufacturers and exporters appear right below ChatGPT’s answer when buyers research suppliers, materials and processes. This guide explains how the ads work, what they cost and who sees them. It also covers why early B2B tests show cheap clicks but few qualified leads so far. It includes a readiness checklist, a 10-step playbook and ad ideas for different buyer types. Lead generation expert Sidharth Pandit adds advice on testing the channel without wasting budget.

ChatGPT ads went live in India on 27 August 2026, and any Indian business can now buy them through a self-serve Ads Manager. For manufacturers, dealers, distributors and exporters, that opens a new way to reach a buyer at the exact moment he asks an AI to help him compare suppliers, materials or processes.

But this is not a magic enquiry machine. ChatGPT ads are new, they are mostly built for consumer brands so far, and they reward businesses that already have a clear offer, a strong landing page and a system to follow up on every lead.

This guide explains how ChatGPT ads work today, where they fit in B2B lead generation, and a practical playbook to test them without burning budget. It includes my insights, who works with manufacturers on lead leakage, channel partner growth and export enquiries.

"For years, manufacturers were told to be found on Google. Now the buyer is asking ChatGPT. The question is no longer only are you on page one, it is are you part of the conversation when the buyer is deciding."

What ChatGPT ads are and how they work

ChatGPT ads are labelled, sponsored cards that appear below ChatGPT's answer, inside the conversation. OpenAI runs the ad system separately from the model, so advertisers cannot pay to change, rank or appear inside the answer itself.

Here is how the platform stands as of November 2026:

Context hints replace keywords

The biggest change for anyone used to Google Ads is targeting. Instead of bidding on a search term, you describe the situation in which your product helps. OpenAI calls these descriptions context hints, and your headline, copy and landing page also feed the matching system.

A weak hint for a casting exporter reads like a keyword list: "SG iron castings, foundry India, casting supplier". A stronger hint reads like a brief: "Procurement and engineering teams comparing casting suppliers in India, asking about grades, tolerances, lead times or how to reduce rejection rates on machined castings."

"Think of a ChatGPT ad as a well-placed visiting card, not a salesman. It sits right next to the answer the buyer just read. Your landing page has to do the selling, and your team has to do the follow-up."

Why this matters for manufacturers and exporters

B2B buyers rarely start with a supplier's name. They start with a problem: why are we getting porosity in these castings, which stainless grade suits a food-grade tank, who can supply forged flanges to ASME standards from India. More of those questions now go to ChatGPT, and OpenAI says its weekly users in India have doubled year on year (exchange4media).

A ChatGPT ad lets you appear right below the answer to that question. That is earlier than a Google search for "casting supplier" and far more focused than a random social media scroll.

What it can do for you

  • Reach buyers during research. Contextual matching can place you next to technical questions that never trigger a keyword campaign (Windmill Strategy).
  • Find new buyers, not old ones. In one industrial B2B pilot, every visitor from ChatGPT ads was a new user to the website.
  • Reach export markets by country. Targeting is set at country level, so an exporter can run a separate campaign for each buyer market where ChatGPT ads are live. Check Ads Manager for the markets your account can target.
  • Cheaper clicks, for now. Two US agencies testing manufacturing audiences paid roughly US$3 to 6 per click, well below their usual Google Search costs.

What the early B2B tests actually show

The biggest limitation for B2B

Ads only show to Free and Go users. Anyone using ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Plus or Pro sees no ads at all. A purchase head at a large OEM who uses his company's ChatGPT Enterprise account is therefore out of reach.

The flip side matters for Indian manufacturers. Owners of small and mid-sized businesses, traders, importers and purchase executives can still be reached whenever they use the Free or Go plan, which is where ads appear.

"Do not judge ChatGPT ads like Google Ads. A buyer asking ChatGPT about rejection rates is not ready to place a PO today. He is building his shortlist. If your ad and your page help him build that shortlist, you are in. If you only ask for a quote, you are invisible."

Is your business ready? An 8-point checklist

ChatGPT ads give you fewer targeting controls than Google or LinkedIn, with no keywords or job-title filters, so your offer, page and follow-up have to do more of the work. Tick every box below before you spend.

  • Your ideal buyer is written down: industry, plant size, the part or material they buy, and who decides.
  • Some of your buyers use free ChatGPT: MSME owners, traders, importers, distributors and purchase executives, not only large-enterprise teams.
  • You have an offer beyond "contact us for a quote": a sample with a full test report, a drawing review, a material-grade guide or a cost-per-part comparison.
  • You have a landing page for each offer, on the same domain as the business you verify in Ads Manager.
  • Tracking is ready: OpenAI Pixel or Conversions API, UTM parameters and Google Analytics 4.
  • Every enquiry lands in a CRM with its source, and someone replies within 24 hours by phone, email or WhatsApp.
  • You have a real test budget. In India the floor is ₹725 a day, but at US$3 to 6 per click that buys only a few clicks; the published B2B tests used 250 to 750 clicks before drawing conclusions.
  • Your category is allowed. Most industrial products are fine; healthcare, financial and legal services face extra review.

"Most manufacturers do not have a lead problem. They have a lead leakage problem. If an enquiry sits in an inbox for three days, it does not matter whether it came from ChatGPT, Google or a trade fair. Fix the follow-up before you buy more traffic."

The playbook: 10 steps from first ad to first order

The aim of a first campaign is learning what brings the right buyer, at a cost you can accept, not instant orders.

  1. Pick one product line and one market. "Precision CNC parts for US pump OEMs" is a campaign. "Our full catalogue for the world" is not.
  2. Build an offer for a buyer who is still researching. Researchers do not want a quotation yet. Offer a material-grade comparison chart, a rejection-rate checklist, a free drawing review, or a sample with a full inspection report.
  3. Make one landing page per buyer intent. A buyer comparing suppliers needs capability proof, certifications, a case study with numbers and a short form with a WhatsApp option. Never send ad clicks to the homepage or a 20 MB catalogue PDF.
  4. Set up tracking before the first rupee. Install the OpenAI Pixel or Conversions API, add UTM parameters to every link, and make sure your CRM stores the lead source.
  5. Sign up at ads.openai.com and verify your business. The domain you advertise must match the business you verify, a common reason for rejection.
  6. Start with the Clicks objective and 3 to 5 ad groups. Build each ad group around one intent, for example buyers comparing suppliers, engineers solving a technical problem, or importers sourcing from India.
  7. Write context hints, then test two styles. Describe the buyer and the conversation in plain sentences. Also test a sharper, keyword-style hint: in one B2B test, keyword-based hints earned a 1.2% CTR against 0.9% for conversational ones.
  8. Write ads that qualify the reader. Say who the ad is for in the first few words, such as "For OEM buyers of machined castings", because headlines can cut off early. Use industry-specific images; in the same test they beat general brand graphics on CTR.
  9. Run for 2 to 4 weeks, then judge on qualified leads. Clicks and CTR tell you about reach. Only enquiries from your ideal buyer tell you whether to scale.
  10. Follow up fast and keep in touch. Reply within 24 hours, then nurture buyers who are not ready with useful emails or WhatsApp updates every few weeks. In B2B, the order usually comes after several conversations, not from the first click.

"The ad gets you ten seconds of attention. The offer decides whether the buyer gives you his number. A 'Material Grade Selection Guide for Pump Castings' will usually beat 'ISO 9001 certified foundry since 1985'. Lead with what the buyer is trying to solve, not with what you want to sell."

Ad ideas for manufacturers and exporters

The best ChatGPT ads look like a helpful next step after the answer, not a banner. Each idea below pairs the buyer's question with an educational offer; the product stays in the background until the buyer is interested.

The last row matters for brands building a dealer and distributor network. A channel partner researching new product lines is often a small business owner, who is more likely to be on a plan that shows ads than a large-enterprise buyer.

"Exporters keep asking me how to get foreign enquiries without flying to every trade fair. The buyer in the UK or the US is already asking AI who can supply him from India. Answer his doubts, quality, compliance, shipping, payment terms, before he asks you, and you are no longer a stranger when he fills your form."

8 mistakes to avoid

  • Expecting Google-style, ready-to-order leads. A ChatGPT user is usually researching. Judge the channel on qualified conversations and shortlists, not instant POs.
  • Advertising your whole company in one ad group. One ad group per buyer intent gives the system a clear signal and gives you clean data.
  • Writing generic copy. "Leading manufacturer of quality products" tells nobody whether the ad is for them. Name the buyer, the part and the problem.
  • Sending traffic to the homepage or a catalogue PDF. The visitor arrives from a specific question; the page must continue that answer.
  • Making "Get a quote" the only call to action. Offer something useful first, then the quote.
  • Launching without tracking, or judging on day three. Without the Pixel, UTMs and a CRM source field, you cannot tell a good campaign from a bad one.
  • Cutting proven channels to fund it. Keep Google Ads, LinkedIn, B2B portals and trade fairs running; fund ChatGPT ads from a separate test budget.
  • Believing anyone who sells "guaranteed ChatGPT recommendations". Ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers. Being recommended inside the answer is earned, as the next section explains.

"New platforms make manufacturers excited and then disappointed within a month. The ones who win treat it as an experiment with a clear question: does this bring us the right buyer at a cost we can live with? Write that question down before you launch."

Paid ads vs being recommended by ChatGPT

There are two ways to show up when a buyer asks ChatGPT about suppliers: pay for the card below the answer, or earn a mention inside the answer. They work best together.

Visibility stops

The two feed each other. The capability pages, FAQs and case studies that help AI assistants understand your business are the same pages that turn an ad click into an enquiry.

"Ads rent you a seat next to the answer. AEO earns you a place inside the answer. For manufacturers I recommend both, but build the content first. A clear page on your grades, tolerances, certifications and export experience helps AI recommend you, and it makes every ad click work harder."

Measuring results: the numbers that matter

Ads Manager reports impressions, clicks, spend, CTR, CPC, CPM and conversions. For a manufacturer, those are only the start; what counts is how many of those clicks become the right conversations.

Expect some under-reporting. A contributor to Entrepreneur, cited by PBJ Marketing, reports that buyers research in ChatGPT and convert later through branded search, direct visits or social. Add a "How did you hear about us?" field to every form and ask it on the first call.

"My advice to every manufacturer is the same: one sheet, one CRM, every lead tagged with its source. Without that, you will either kill a channel that was working or keep paying for one that never was."

The expert verdict: should you test ChatGPT ads now?

We asked Sidharth Pandit for his bottom line for Indian manufacturers and exporters.

"Test it, but test it like an engineer, not like a gambler. Pick one product, one buyer market and one strong offer. Set up tracking and a 24-hour follow-up before you go live. Give it a month, then look at one number: how many enquiries came from the kind of buyer you actually want. If the answer is zero, fix the offer and the page before you blame the platform. And while you test, keep building the content that helps ChatGPT recommend you for free."

Test now if you sell a high-value or repeat-order product, your buyers research before they buy, you can make an educational offer, and your follow-up system already works.

Wait if your margins cannot absorb US$3 to 6 per click, your tracking is not in place, or your only buyers are large enterprises whose teams use ChatGPT Business or Enterprise.

Frequently asked questions

Can Indian manufacturers advertise on ChatGPT?

Yes. ChatGPT ads launched in India on 27 August 2026, and self-serve access opened on 4 September 2026 at ads.openai.com, with daily budgets starting at ₹725.

Will running ads make ChatGPT recommend my company?

No. OpenAI keeps ads separate from answers, and advertisers cannot influence what ChatGPT says. Recommendations inside answers come from your content and reputation.

Can I target purchase managers by job title or company size?

No. There are no job-title, demographic or interest filters. You target through context hints, country and platform. Customer-list audiences exist, but one agency found remarketing needs at least 25,000 matched users.

Is there a lead form inside the ad?

No. Each ad links to your landing page, so the page and its form carry the conversion.

Can I target buyers in other countries?

Targeting works at country level, and ChatGPT ads now run in many markets, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan and Brazil. PBJ Marketing reports that OpenAI's availability page listed 56 countries in October 2026. Confirm in Ads Manager which markets your account can target.

How much should a manufacturer budget for a first test?

There is no reliable benchmark yet. Plan for enough clicks to judge lead quality; the published B2B tests collected 250 to 750 clicks over about a month at US$3 to 6 per click.

Should I stop Google Ads, LinkedIn or B2B portals to fund this?

No. In one B2B test, Google Search produced qualified leads while ChatGPT ads produced none in the same period. Treat ChatGPT ads as an experiment funded on top of what already works.
